Sichuan Province

Geographical Position and Administrative Division

Known as the “Land of Abundance”, Sichuan is located in the southwestern hinterland along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Sichuan governs 21 cities (prefectures), and 183 counties (cities, districts). The province covers an area of 486,000 square kilometres and the provincial capital is Chengdu.

Resource Advantages

Sichuan is rich in natural resources, including hydro energy, coal and natural gas. Mineral resources such as vanadium, titanium, lithium, iron pyrite, mirabilite, and salt mine are among the top identified resources reserves in China. Sichuan is also one of the nationally largest bases of traditional Chinese medicines.

Key Industries

Sichuan is a large economic province in west China, with its Gross Domestic Product, total grain output, total industrial output value and total retail sales of consumer goods among the top in the western region. Sichuan is an important industrial base in China and a large industrial province in the western region, with complete modern industrial systems and categories. Electronics, machinery, pharmaceutical, and military industries of the province seize important positions in China. In recent years, Sichuan Province has proposed to build a strong economic province and create a new economic system with high-quality development, and focus on the five pillar industries including electronic information, equipment manufacturing, food and beverage, advanced materials, and energy and chemical industry, together with digital economy (5+1 modern industrial system).

On April 1, 2017, China (Sichuan) Pilot Free Trade Zone (Sichuan Pilot Free Trade Zone) was officially established. Sichuan Pilot Free Trade Zone covers an area of 119.99 square kilometres and covers three districts: 1) Chengdu Tianfu New Areas; 2) Chengdu Qingbaijiang Railway Port Area; 3) South Sichuan Port Area. With the strategic positioning of “being an inland city, linking the east and west, serving the whole country and facing the world”, Sichuan Pilot Free Trade Zone is built into a development and opening-up area as a western gateway city, a leading area for inland opening-up and strategy support, an international open channel hub, a new highland for inland open economy, as well as a demonstration area for collaborative opening of inland and coastal and border areas, as well as areas along the Yangtze River.

The Municipality of Chongqing

Chongqing Municipality, also “yu”, located in the eastern part of the southwestern region and along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, is the focus for the country in development of the western region. In March 1997, Chongqing Municipality was approved as a municipality directly under the Central Government. It is the fourth of this kind after Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.

Chongqing now governs 38 administrative districts and counties (autonomous counties) , including 26 districts (Wanzhou District, Qianjiang District, Fuling District, Yuzhong District, Dadukou District, Jiangbei District, Shapingba District, Jiulongpo District, Nan'an District, Beibei District, Yubei District, Banan District, Changshou District, Jiangjin District, Hechuan District, Yongchuan District, Nanchuan District, Qijiang District, Dazu District, Tongnan District, Tongliang District, Rongchang District, Bishan District, Liangping District, Wulong District, Kaizhou District); and 12 counties (autonomous counties) (Chengkou County, Fengdu County, Dianjiang County, Zhongxian County, Yunyang County, Fengjie County, Wushan County, Wuxi County, Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County , Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County).

Main development zones in Chongqing include Chongqing High-tech Zone, Chongqing Economic and Technological Development Zone, Chongqing Xiyong Micro-electronics Industrial Park, Chongqing Liang Jiang New Area, Chongqing Jiangjin Comprehensive Bonded Zone, Wanzhou Economic-Technological Development Zone and Changshou Economic and Technological Development Area. Chongqing has initially formed an industrial system based on automobile, motorcycle, equipment manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical, building materials and other industries.

On April 1, 2017, the China (Chongqing) Pilot Free Trade Zone was officially inaugurated with an implementation area of Chongqing Pilot Free Trade Zone is 119.98 square kilometers, covering 3 areas, namely Liangjiang area, Xiyong area and Guoyuangang area.

Shaanxi Province

Geographical Position and Administrative Division

Shaanxi Province, abbreviated as "Shaan" or "Qin", is located along the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It has Shanxi and Henan on its east, Ningxia and Gansu on its west, Sichuan, Chongqing and Hubei on its south, and Inner Mongolia on its north. It possesses the important place which connects the east and central parts as well as the northwest and southwest parts of China. The province governs 1 sub-provincial capital city, 10 cities with districts, 31 municipal districts, 7 county-level cities 69 counties. The capital city is Xi’an.

The northern part of Shaanxi Province is located on the Loess Plateau; the southern part belongs to Qinba Mountain; and the middle part is the alluvial plain of the Weihe River known as "eight hundred miles of Qinchuan". The overall terrain is high in the north and south and low in the middle. The main mountain ranges include Qinling, Dabashan and Huashan. By taking the Qinling Mountains as the boundary, the rivers passing through the province are divided into two major systems, namely, the Yellow River and the Yangtze River.

Key Industries

1.High-tech—Shaanxi has become an important base for the development of hi-tech industries in China. It has the only comprehensive national hi-tech industrial base in the western area of China.

2.Energy and chemical—Shaanxi Province has rich energy resources. Fossil energy resources such as coal, oil and natural gas here are featured by huge reserves, excellent quality and good mining conditions. Shaanxi has unique advantages in building large-scale energy and chemical bases.

3.Science and technology industry for national defense—Shaanxi is a giant province for science and technology industry for national defence in China. It has formed a scientific research, production and test system for national defense which consists of six industries, namely, nuclear, aerospace, aviation, weapons, ships and military electronics and under which, plants, research institutes, universities and colleges are supplemental to each other.

4.Forest and fruit industry—Shaanxi is the largest apple-growing province in China. The four major fruits, namely, apples, pears, dates and kiwifruits produced here are well known at home and abroad.

5.Animal husbandry—Diversified natural environment in Shaanxi Province provide good conditions for the development of animal husbandry. Qinchuan cattle, Shanbei white cashmere goat and southern Shaanxi lean meat pig all have distinctive characteristics. Dairy cows and dairy products of this province are among the best in China, making Shaanxi an important milk source base of the country.

6.Tourism—Shaanxi is one of the provinces enjoying the most abundant and unique tourist resources in China, and is known as the “Natural History Museum” of ancient Chinese society.

Resource Advantages

Shaanxi is rich in mineral resources and is one of the major mineral resource provinces in China. Many minerals here seize important positions in the country. Among the 15 pillar mineral reserves that the national economy relies on, oil reserve rank third in the country and coal, natural gas and cement and limestone all rank fourth. Among these minerals, oil, natural gas, molybdenum, gold and cement limestone not only have considerable reserves, but also have good grade and quality, which have obvious advantages in the domestic market.

Both the Yellow River and the Yangtze River pass through Shaanxi Province. The province's average annual precipitation was 676 mm, and the total water resource was 44.5 billion cubic meters.

Guizhou Province

Geographical Position and Administrative Division

Guizhou Province, shortly “Qian” or “Gui”, is located in the southwest region of China. The whole province consists of 6 prefecture-level cities (Guiyang, Zunyi, Liupanshui, Anshun, Bijie, Tongren) and 3 autonomous prefectures (Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture). The province covers an area of 176,000 square kilometres and the provincial capital is Guiyang.

Guizhou Province has abundant natural resources in China. Guizhou Province is endowed with rich energy resources, including water, electricity and coal.

Guizhou is rich in mineral resources, including mercury, barite, sandstone for chemical fertilizers, sandstone for metallurgy, diabase for facing, sandstone for brick and tile, phosphate rock, bauxite, rare earth, magnesium, manganese and gallium.

Yunnan Province

Geographical Position and Administrative Division

Yunnan Province, abbreviated as "Dian" or "Yun", is located in the southwestern border of China, bordering Myanmar in the west and Laos and Vietnam in the south and southeast respectively. The provincial capital is Kunming.

There are 16 prefectures (cities) in Yunnan Province, namely Kunming, Qujing, Yuxi, Baoshan, Zhaotong, Lijiang, Pu'er, Lincang, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Dehong Dai Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, and Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Tibet Autonomous Region

Geographical Position and Administrative Division

The Tibet Autonomous Region, also referred to as "Tibet", is in the southwestern area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China. The whole Region covers an area of 1,228,000 square kilometers and the average elevation is above 4,000 meters. The capital city is Lhasa.

Tibet currently has 6 prefecture-level cities (Lhasa, Changdu, Shigatse, Nyingchi, Shannan and Nagqu and 1 prefecture(Ngari).

Key Industries

In terms of industry, Tibet mainly develops energy, processing of specialty agricultural and livestock products, superior minerals, traditional Tibetan medicines, ethnic handicrafts, etc. In agriculture, Tibet vigorously develops specialty agriculture and animal husbandry, and builds product and processing bases for specialty agriculture and livestock products such as barley, yak and cashmere goats.

Qinghai Province, or shortly “Qing”, is located in west China and in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The whole province covers an area of 722,000 square kilometres and the provincial capital is Xining.
